A Subtle Art of Listening
Cranial osteopathy is the name given to a subtle and refined approach to osteopathy that follows all the principles of osteopathy, but includes the anatomy and physiology of the head. It is not a separate therapy — it is an extension of osteopathic thinking applied with exceptional sensitivity.
Cranial osteopaths use a very highly developed sense of touch to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality throughout the body, and to feel movements of very small amplitude which reflect the way the body is functioning.
The osteopath is often drawn to areas in the body that have been affected by past events, such as old accidents and injuries — even if the patient is unaware of them.
Diagnosis and treatment are intimately linked as the osteopath works to activate the innate ability of the body to heal itself, offering gentle and specific support to bring the tissues into a state of balance and release — restoring health.
Reading the Body's Story
Watching a cranial treatment is like watching someone read a book. From the outside nothing much appears to be happening — but if you are the one reading the book, you are transported into a rich and fascinating world.
The osteopath is deeply connected to the inner world of living anatomy. Each tissue has its own distinctive signature — tension, fluidity, restriction. Treatment follows the tissues, not a fixed protocol.
In treatment the osteopath is guided by the tissues and supports the re-balancing of areas of dysfunction. Rather than imposing a correction, the practitioner listens and responds — creating the conditions for change.
The body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Cranial treatment creates the conditions for this self-healing to occur, working at a pace the body can accept and integrate.
For Everyone — Every Age
Cranial osteopathy is widely known for the treatment of babies, but it is equally effective for children, adults and the elderly. It is a way of viewing the entire body — a philosophy of practice — not just a technique.
Babies & Newborns
Birth strain, colic, unsettled sleep, plagiocephaly (flat head). Gentle care from the very first days.
Children & Teenagers
Growing pains, headaches, postural habits, sports injuries. Support through all stages of development.
Adults & Elderly
Chronic pain, stress, headaches, post-injury, complex or longstanding conditions.
Pregnant Women
Safe and gentle throughout all trimesters. Adapted to the changing needs of mother and baby.
Performers
Stress-related tension, jaw issues (TMJ), performance anxiety and overuse patterns.
Post-Surgical
Gentle recovery support following surgery — working with scar tissue, fascial tension and systemic recovery.
What Does a Session Feel Like?
Cranial osteopathic treatment is very gentle and relaxing. Many patients fall asleep during treatment — a sign the nervous system is settling into a deeper state of rest.
During a session you may feel warmth, a sense of release, or mild aching that quickly passes. Some patients experience a pleasant heaviness, or a feeling of being held very lightly.
Most people feel deeply relaxed — sometimes profoundly so. It is common to feel this effect for several hours after treatment.
Cranial osteopathy works in harmony with the body, not forcing the pace of change. This is why it is so useful for long-standing or complex conditions where more forceful approaches may not be appropriate.
Be prepared for wide-ranging improvements — patients often notice benefits in areas they didn't expect, as the body reorganises itself towards health.
