About Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a caring, thoughtful, hands-on approach to treating mechanical problems in the body. It assesses the whole person — physical and emotional — and works by improving body structure to support tissue repair through better blood circulation and nerve supply.
"Osteopath" is a legally protected title in the UK, regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).
Cranial osteopathy is a refined, subtle approach that includes the anatomy and physiology of the head. Practitioners use very sensitive touch to detect areas of tension throughout the whole body. It works with the body's own healing rhythms.
It is gentle enough for newborns and effective for all ages.
Osteopathy involves longer consultations (30–60 minutes) with a whole-person focus. Chiropractic addresses similar issues with shorter sessions (10–15 minutes) emphasising spinal manipulation. Physiotherapy, often NHS-referred, focuses on specific injuries using exercises and equipment.
All three are regulated professions. Mary is regulated by the General Osteopathic Council.
Yes. Under the Osteopaths Act 1993, only those registered with the GOsC may use the title "Osteopath." Mary has been registered since 1999.
Treatment & Reactions
After treatment, people often feel tired and a little achey for around 24 hours. This is normal and passes. Some experience immediate relief; others go through a transition period as the body adjusts toward healthier function.
This depends on your individual circumstances, the nature of your condition, and how long it has been present. Mary will give you a realistic idea at your first appointment.
Continuing activities that aggravate the problem does slow progress, though sometimes this is unavoidable. Mary will advise on modifications that allow you to keep going where possible, without making things worse.
Mary's approach is always gentle. Cranial osteopathy in particular is very subtle. Some patients experience mild sensitivity during treatment which passes quickly. Most find sessions deeply relaxing.
Babies, Children & Pregnancy
Yes. Cranial osteopathy is widely used and very safe for babies. Mary holds an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy and is DBS checked (enhanced) and NSPCC Level 3 Safeguarding trained. She asks parents to be present throughout every appointment.
Plagiocephaly means a misshapen or flattened head. It can result from birth moulding, positioning, or neck stiffness. Osteopathy can help address retained moulding from birth and neck tightness. For positional flattening, "tummy time" is also recommended. Severe cases may need helmet therapy.
These are normal self-soothing behaviours. Prolonged dummy or thumb use can affect jaw and palate development. If you are concerned, Mary can assess and discuss options at your appointment.
Yes. Mary is a recommended Pelvic Partnership practitioner with many years of experience treating pregnant women. Treatment is always adapted to be safe at every stage of pregnancy.
